Since May 2015, six confirmed cases of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) have occurred among men who have sex with men in the Chicago metropolitan area, one of them fatal. IMD is a rapidly progressive disease which may result in death within 48 hours of symptom onset. Among the 6 cases, African-American and HIV positive men have been disproportionately affected and several have used hook-up apps (Grindr, Jack’d, A4A, BBRT, etc.) The Chicago Department of Public Health is looking to spread the word of this outbreak among providers and trusted community resources for at-risk groups.
